War Memorial Reredos from St. Aldate's Church Oxford.

The memorial was designed by Mr. Harold Rogers, Architect and the Rerodos was built by Messrs. A.R. Mowbray & Co.

The Reredos is entirely of oak and consists of a series of Canopied Niches with Tracered Panels between them, the whole being enclosed in a deeply moulded frame with carved flowers and surnounted by a cresting. The Niches contain figures of the Patron Saints of the Church and of the Cathedral, together with the four Patrons of the British Isles, in the following order (from left to right):-
St. Aldate with model hte church at his feet
St Patrick as a missionary with Cross -Staff and Book
St George in combat with the Dragon
St. Andrew with his cross
St. David with Dove and Book
St. Frideswide with model of the Cathedral.

The intervening Panels have symbols of our Lord's Passion, viz.:-
The Bag of Silver
The PIllar and Scourge
The Cross and the Crown of Thorns
The Spear and the Reed
The Coat and Dice

The whole is decorated in colour and guilding.

Oak carved Statue of St. AugustineOak carved Statue of St. Augustine

A very fine early 19th century oak carved statue of St. Augustine of Hippo (354-430). The greatest of the Latin fathers and one of the mos eminent Doctors of the church. Augustine was born 13th November 354AD in Tagaste, Nomidia (now Souk-Ahras, Algeria). His father Patricius (died circa 371) was a pagan (later converted to Christianity) but his mother Monica was a devout christian who laboured untiringly for her son's conversion. He was canonized by the Roman Catholic Church. Augustine was educated as Rhetorician in the North African cities of Targaste, Madura and Cathage between the ages of 15 and 30. He lived a Carthaginian woman whos name ids unknown who in 372 bore him a son whom he name Adeodatus, which is latin for the gift of God. About 383 Augustine left Carthage for Rome a year later he went on to Milan where he met the Bishop of Milan, St. Ambrose.
